Opening statement

Civil Engineering Program Mission

To be the Civil Engineering program of choice in the Northwest for students seeking quality education and research experience in partnership with regional industry and government.

Goals

The goals of the CEE program at Portland State University are to:

  1. provide high-quality undergraduate and graduate courses that prepare students for practice in government, industry, and private consulting
  2. provide a well-rounded education in the major discipline areas of civil engineering
  3. offer program flexibility allowing students to select one or more major discipline areas for specialization
  4. maintain an overall emphasis on design
  5. foster interaction with the local industrial community

Program Objectives

The educational objectives of the Portland State University Civil Engineering Program are as follows:

1.      Prepare graduates for all essential aspects of responsible professional practice in civil engineering.  The program will:

 

1.      Provide graduates with the scientific and technical skills needed to engineer projects and to practice their profession ethically and responsibly.

 

2.      Prepare graduates to work effectively in the professional engineering community through an understanding of concepts, techniques and approaches that cross traditional disciplines.

 

3.      Prepare graduates to communicate effectively with other engineers, decision-makers and the public at large.

 

4.      Provide graduates with an understanding of contemporary issues relevant to civil engineering in a context that includes the long-term sustainability and well-being of the community.

 

5.      Prepare graduates to advance in the profession through professional registration and an appreciation of the need for lifelong learning.

 

2.      Prepare graduates to enter and succeed in graduate programs of advanced professional education or research.
